Coprevalence of modifiable gastric cancer risk factors and gastric health among Chinese high-risk groups.

Journal: Scientific reports

This study analyzed the distribution and co-prevalence of 11 modifiable gastric cancer risk factors and their association with gastric health in 12,071 adults aged 40-69 from Yangzhong City.

The risk factors included lifestyle and dietary habits such as:

  • Smoking
  • Drinking
  • Inadequate fruit and vegetable intake
  • Red meat consumption
  • Pickled and fried foods
  • Irregular diet
  • Leftover food consumption
  • Eating speed
  • High salt intake
  • Helicobacter pylori infection

Nearly 98% of participants had multiple risk factors, with inadequate fruit and vegetable intake being the most common.

The risk factors often co-occurred, and a higher number of these factors was significantly associated with increased odds of gastric disease.

The findings underscore the need for comprehensive public health interventions focused on:

  • Awareness
  • Risk identification
  • Tailored preventive strategies during screening

These measures aim to improve gastric health.
