Advanced innovations in reducing anastomotic leak: a review of emerging biomaterial applications in colorectal surgery.

Journal: International journal of colorectal disease

This review addresses the challenge of anastomotic leaks following colorectal cancer surgeries, a complication that increases mortality despite advancements in minimally invasive techniques.

While diverting ileostomy has traditionally helped mitigate this risk, it also causes complications and negatively affects quality of life.

The article evaluates emerging biomaterial-based devices designed to protect anastomoses without external stomas, including:

  • Colovac and LeakGuard (FDA-designated breakthrough devices),
  • CG-100,
  • C-seal, and
  • Self-degrading Intestinal Diversion stent.

These innovations show promise in reducing leak rates but require further large-scale randomized trials to confirm their long-term safety, efficacy, and cost-effectiveness.

The review underscores their potential to improve surgical outcomes and patient quality of life.
