HPV Workshop for Underserved High School Students.

Journal: Journal of cancer education : the official journal of the American Association for Cancer Education

This study addresses the rising incidence of HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer and the persistent disparities in HPV vaccination rates among underserved populations.

An interactive educational workshop was conducted with high school students from disadvantaged areas. The workshop covered:

  • HPV and its transmission
  • Associated cancers
  • Benefits of vaccination

Surveys conducted before and two weeks after the workshop showed significant improvements in participants’ knowledge about HPV’s role in oropharyngeal cancer and vaccine coverage.

Additionally, the workshop:

  • Increased students’ confidence in discussing HPV
  • Boosted their support for vaccination at school entry

Notably, seven students received the HPV vaccine between surveys, indicating a positive impact on vaccination uptake.

These findings support the effectiveness of targeted educational interventions in improving HPV awareness and vaccination rates among underserved adolescents.
